Spoiled Onions: An Exclusive Opus XIII Spoiler - Delusory Warlock

Hey there all you Ephemeral Phantoms and Fallacious Wanderers, and welcome to Lv.1 Onion Knight: The Final Fantasy TCG blog that doesn't just want to return to the Void - they ARE the Void.

If waiting for Opus XII spoilers felt like it took forever, then this round sure felt like it snuck up on me faster than a renegade Cactuar, ready to swipe every last Gil from my pockets. Surely there can't be more cards coming out so soon, right? I never even got to make all the exciting builds I was totally planning on making instead of playing nothing but Samurai decks! But Opus XIII looks like it's going to be introducing a new wave of support for Tribal decks that have fallen to the wayside in recent years. We haven't seen any Manikin cards since all the way back in Opus III, so I was excited to see they're finally making a comeback, and even more excited to spoil what may become one of the most important cards in modern Manikin builds: Delusory Warlock

Now the first effect is one that we've recently seen on the other newly revealed Manikin card -  and we'll get to her in a minute. But here we have another Backup that can reduce the cost of the big boss monster of the deck, Opus II Exdeath (or I suppose either of the other non-Manikin related Lightning Exdeath Forwards if you really want to confuse your opponent). Much like how Manikins in the past have have had effects mirroring those of the character they're intended to imitate, we see something similar to the original Opus I Golbez's effect in a more limited form with the ability to search out Job: Manikin cards from the deck.

What sets Delusory Warlock apart from other archetype specific 3 CP search cards is that this is the first one where multiples can be played on the field at once thanks to its status as a generic card like all other Manikins. In addition Warlock doesn't specify that the card needs to be a Manikin Forward, which means you can use it to search for other Manikin Backups, such as the newly revealed Lady Of Antiquity.

Major thanks to Exdeath the Wizard aka Alex Hancox for revealing this spoiler. Check out his page and bask in his general grandeur and overall sumptuousness.

Having a way to quickly access another Backup that can reduce Exdeath's cost while also letting you color correct your Manikins is a great way to start ramping up the deck quickly. Of course, you could also go for other Manikins like Ephemeral Summoner (Yuna) or Horror of Antiquity (Prishe). However there is one major restriction to Delusory Warlock's effect, in that he can't search for Lightning Element Manikins. While this means he can't search out more copies of himself, it also restricts you for searching out one of the most popular combo pieces of Manikin decks: Fleeting Flash.

Now for those of you out there who, for some reason, have never played an archetype that hasn't seen any support for ten sets, the popular thing to do was to play Fleeting Flash with Exdeath's effect, playing a 9K Power Forward with Haste for free. In early sets, this combo actually made for a decently effective aggro style deck - The proto Marche/Ritz combo, if you will. So not being able to search out one of the primary combo pieces could certainly be bothersome. But you could just use Delusory Warlock to search out your other Manikins while also including Aldo in your deck to fetch both your Exdeaths and your Fleeting Flashes.

Of course, if more Manikin Backups of different elements get added in Opus XIII, Delusory Warlock's inability to search out Lightning cards could make this less of an issue. Personally I'm hoping that this set will see Manikins become a successful rainbow element aggro deck. If that comes to pass, it may not be that difficult to find a place for those Bhunivelze Prerelease promos. After all, what could be more satisfying than changing the big boss monster of a deck revolving around mindless puppets from a Wizard, to a God?

So that's my spoiler for Opus XIII! As always, major thanks to Square Enix and Richelle Brady for giving me the opportunity to share these with the community and enabling me to do more card game based chicanery and general monkeyshines. And hey, it wouldn't be another set release without another round of the infamous Opus Bingo right?

Geez, this went up a week ago and the deluge of community reveals, Japanese poster spoilers, and Card of the Week reveals have gotten a healthy handful of spaces already marked off! Are there any squares you're really hoping get marked off this time around?

Well folks, Opus XIII is about a month until release and I'm already hyped up for "Job: Engineer" to become a thing. Maybe we'll finally get a good Cid Pollendina so I can finally have a deck filled with characters who have beards as luxurious as mine. But for now, I'll be here trying to scrounge up a Sephiroth tin to raffle away so I can become a selfless folk hero in the eyes of the FFTCG community.

Until next time - keep on grinding,
